The use of Twitter for business is a growing trend, but many people just broadcast their content and forget that it can also be a engagement platform. However, it can seem hard to authentically connect with your customers there.
However, contrary to some media reports, Twitter isn’t dead and can still be a vital part of a digital strategy for your business. Taking Twitter to the next level is all about how you harness the power of one of the best platforms online to grow your brand and connect with a vibrant community.
Madalyn Skylar, creator of the #TwitterSmarter podcast and Twitter chat, shared with us why Twitter is an important asset to your business, and how to create a powerful, engaged account that reaches the people who want to share and purchase your products and services.
Here are the 6 tips she shared.
Tip #1: Have an amazing Twitter profile
Make sure your Twitter profile represents who you are and who you want to connect with while also practicing good SEO methods. Your profile should be a platform to engage and interact with people and join conversations with potential customers.

Tip #2: Get on the radar of industry experts and journalists
Tag industry experts and journalists into the conversation when the context calls for it. This gives them the opportunity to join the conversation and interact with you and others in the Twittersphere. Be sure you don't spam them by tagging them into conversations that are not directly related to them. Another great way to get on the radar of industry experts? Find Twitter chats that resonate with you and join the conversation to connect with new people. Often, influencers and journalists join in these chats and are on the lookout for smart industry experts. Be sure to add value (not links) to the chat and people will take notice and follow the breadcrumbs in your profile (see tip #1).

Tip #3: Avoid mistakes when possible
Have a clear plan before engaging on Twitter. Show good customer service skills and connect with people in a positive way. If someone is complaining about you or your service try to take it offline, through Twitter messaging or email to correct the problem.
Do relevant hashtags when engaging with people/customers on Twitter, but don't use too many. One or two are usually enough, and studies show that using more than two hashtags can drop your engagement by as much as 17%.
The most misused part of Twitter is probably the direct message (DM). Many Twitter automation tools allow you to set an automatic DM when someone new follows you. Many times, people use this auto-DM to try and get the new follower to follow a link to their blog, website, product, service or even to try to get them to follow them on a different platform, like Facebook or LinkedIn. This is honestly the most annoying practice on Twitter. You have no idea why someone has followed you, engage first on the platform they chose as their first touch and migrate later. Auto-DMs are a bad practice, even if the content is good, because they clutter up the inbox and make people tune out to your message and perhaps even unfollow you.

Don't forget to include your hashtag when participating in a Twitter chat. That's essential. #smbhou

Tip #4: Curate and create interesting content
Curating content gives you the opportunity share content your community wants to read and share. It also allows you to work smarter, not harder! Use RSS readers like Feedly, Nuzzel & Buffer to find and create interesting content with which your online community wants to engage. Don't forget to pin tweets to the top of your profile and share info your audience wants.

Tip #5: Automation is ok….sometimes
Automating content can be a good thing if it's used properly. Using an app like Buffer, Tweetdeck, among others helps you schedule curated content. While these automation tools are great to help you work smarter, it is never okay to automate your connections. Engage with your connections in real time at all times and you will build a stronger community online.
Absolutely automate content if that works for you👍. But DON'T automate connections!! 👎#smbhou

— sarahshah (@sarahshah) November 13, 2015
Tip #6: Use tools to grow and be effective
Find and use tools like IFTTT, Social Quant and Buffer to help you grow your Twitter account while using time effectively. IFTTT can help you create your lists easily and effortlessly while giving you time to connect with your online community in real-time. Another great tool like Buffer gives you the opportunity to share the content your following wants to read and share.

Tip #7: Take advantage of new tools
Take advantage of new tools in the social media world and learn what works best for Twitter. For instance, Twitter is a very visual platform so be sure to include photos and graphics into your content marketing schedule. You can create these graphics with free programs like Canva. Also, try the new 30-second video capability in Twitter to engage your online community. Let your followers see who you are and engage with them in a new way.
