Yesterday, there was intense news coverage about the death of the telegram.
But Western Union didn’t send out a press release to announce the death of the telegram, it simply posted the news on its website.
Last year, 20,000 telegrams were sent at about $10 a message. The first telegram was sent on April 9, 1839 and the last on January 27, 2006.
One commenter on NPR said that the telegram was “killed” by the telephone, considering the age of the telephone, which was pattented by Alexander Graham Bell on February 14, 1876, old technologies don't die easily or quickly.
