Last year, when PR feeds, which include podcasts, blogs, wikis and news sites were growing at a fantastic rate, I laid down the gauntlet challenging the PR community to guess what the number of feeds would be at the end of 2006.
Constantin Basturea, who keeps track of new PR feeds, finished tallying up the numbers over the weekend and found that there are 630 feeds, up from the 374 that he reported on January 31, 2006. It’s been quite a year.
I had a few people make a guess (without going over) in order to receive a then unrevealed “fabulous” prize. David Jones reminded me that it was time to tally up and pay up, so I contacted Constantin, who humored me once again (thanks so much).
So, here is the issue, we ALL went over the total. I guessed 650 feeds, which was close, but even with my remedial math was 20 feeds too many. Andrea Weckerle adding 7 for 657 feeds.
Then there was the optimistic crowd. Ike Pigott said 805, David Jones said 924, and Mike Driehorst guessed a whopping 1,234 (you think he was being a little smart aleck with that guess?).
So, no one won the prize, but the problem is that I HAVE the prize, an original numbered and signed print by Hugh McLeod. You can see me holding copy of it at the top of this post, along with Alan Weinkrantz, a local PR blogger. So, who should get the prize, Andrea, for coming the closest, or Constantin, for doing all the work to make our little contest possible? Please vote in the comments.
And while you are voting, why not also make a guess about the number of feeds for 2007. I will step out again with my guess and say 750.
