Social media is a great way to build a community around your brand. But how do you do it? And even if you do, how does it convert into money for both you and your business? Our speaker this month, John Sparks has successfully built and monetized a community of followers for his own business and has taught others how to do the same with theirs. During our conversation with John, we heard how he grew his Twitter account, organically, from less than 800 followers to almost 200,000 followers in just two years and how you can do the same.
This month, our speaker, John Sparks gives you tips he has used in his social media strategy to build meaningful relationships with his followers online.
Tip #1 – Attitude and persistence are key in any social media strategy
Before beginning any social media strategy, be sure to look over each account figure out if you are on target, reaching the right people. As with any social media strategy, it’s best to keep a positive attitude and look over your social media accounts regularly to be sure you are staying on point with your efforts and building a relationship with your followers

Tip #2 – Learn how to choose who to connect with
Analyze your followers and potential followers (people who are in the same niche as you). Look to see who asks questions, who is interested in tweeting, who is engaging other people and who has interesting content to share. This will help you choose the best people to connect with that are actually looking to connect with others online.

Tip #3 – Have the right tools for the “trade”
There are many tools available online to help you with your social media strategy. Below are some of the best tools to use when you are connecting with others and building your “empire” online.
Namechk – Save time branding by using namechk.com. Namechk lets you check each social media platform and make sure the name you are branding with is available across the board. This will ensure you are able to get the name you have chosen without having to search each platform individually.

Tip #4 – Make graphics people want to share
Plan in advance for upcoming “national day” celebrations by batch processing graphics once a week. Use National Day Calendar (also gives you hashtags to use) and create graphics for the “national day” celebrations that fit your niche and voice. These graphics could include a quote for the day or an image associated with the day with a text overlay.
Use Pixlr to create images for social media for free. This online photo editing software is similar to Photoshop without the download and extra software on your computer. Upload or create, resize and layer great images for your social media platforms. Another similar option is the Pablo Tool by Buffer.

Tip #5 – “Stalk with Excellence” (in a good way) to build your following
Look at the main person you want to follow you back (could be a verified account). Follow the non-verified follower of the person and tweet with them. Engage and connect with these users to stalk with excellence (in a good way).
Yes, you CAN stalk in a good way! @IAmJohnSparks #SMBHOU

SMBHOU POWER TIP:
Find a community through a hashtag, like #SMBHOU and follow those people. Talk to them, but don't force the conversation. In the words of John Starks, “Don't be a hashole!”
