After my post last week, No Place for PR in the Blogosphere?, and the excellent conversation that followed, I wanted to talk about the role of PR in social media.
It seems that Giovanni Rodriguez of the GoodSeed and Eastwickers was thinking along the same wavelength and has published a two part series on the ten roles for public relations in new media. He also gives historical and contemporary examples of people that embody the principles of these roles.
Giovanni calls them the “jobs” for PR in the new media, I like to think of them as roles since most PR practitioners will seamlessly move between them. However, this is a particularly interesting read and it helps to gives an idea of how broad a role PR plays.
Giovanni’s Ten Roles for PR
1. The Researcher
2. The Anthropologist
3. The Gardener
4. The Communications Architect
5. The Impresario
6. The Connector
7. The Professor
8. The Social Reformer
9. The Critic
10. The Hub
A tip of the hat to Shel Isreal, who Giovanni calls “The Critic” for drawing my attention to this post.
