Finding a way to rise above all the noise on social media may seem impossible, but Zoetica Media founder Kami Huyse has a sure-fire way that uses authenticity to draw others to you.
Show Your Personal Side
“The number one ‘killer app’ for you is your personality,” she says. Too often “we don't show who we are, we don't show what we bring to the table, and we don't then attract anyone to connect with us.”
Rather than showing up on social media just when we’re announcing or promoting something, she recommends “think[ing] about ways to show your personality that are going to bring people in” all the time.
“What you have to have is some kind of spark so people can connect with you. You need to be relatable,” she explains.
Show a Challenge You Overcame
One way of doing that is by allowing people to see the ‘real you’, even if it’s imperfect. When you do that, “they're like, ‘yeah I could see myself in that…’”
Kami did this very thing when she shared her frustrations about trying to get the audio right for the Audible recording of her chapter of The Most Amazing Marketing Book Ever. Check out the photo on LinkedIn of Kami using a towel as a sound barrier! 🎙️
“I think it's so important that you think about that – what is your personality and how can you put it in your post so that not all of your posts are just promote, promote, promote, announce announce, announce, announce,” Kami advises.
Join A Community and Grow Your Own
“Once you start showing your personality… you're going to find existing [likeminded] communities,” she says. Then, “as your personality gets out there you're going to start attracting the right people and you can grow your own community,” if you like.
Joining a community of people with shared interests isn’t hard. In fact, Kami believes one of the easiest ways to do that is on Twitter, even now with all the changes the social media platform is undergoing.
Break Through the Noise
“With all of this stuff including AI and all the [other] crazy stuff, personality and connection, understanding and knowing someone and seeing them is 100% is a killer app for social media. It always has been and it always will be,” she notes.
Focusing on impact rather than pure numbers will help you reach your goals. “You may not get huge reach, but what if you get huge connections, and those connections get you the work you need.”
Kami explains that the vast majority of her agency work comes from referrals. “The reason people refer me is because they know what I do, know who I am, they know where I'm at, they know how I operate.
Create Unfinished Posts
Engaging your audience and inviting them to participate directly with you is another way to raise your profile. Kami calls this creating ‘unfinished posts,’ such as polls featuring options people can choose from, or asking people to help you choose the best of several options when you’re faced with a decision.
As Kami points out, even when things change on social media, the desire to connect remains constant. “If you facilitate connections you will be relevant, and if you show how you overcome your challenges, and that you're a human being, and that you're somebody that people can talk to and that you're accessible, you will attract an audience, you will attract a community.”
