Not a day goes by when social networks and news sites aren’t flooded with information about artificial intelligence. It ranges from forecasting a promising future where AI makes previously untreatable diseases a thing of the past and helps combat climate change, to painting a far less rosy picture, with the concern about job elimination at the top of many people’s minds.
But AI can also be a valuable tool for professionals, especially in the creative industries, as Zoetica Media founder Kami Huyse shared in a recent exchange with #TwitterSmarter founder Madalyn Sklar.
Start with these AI tools for content creation
The AI tools Kami uses in her agency and recommends to PR and marketing consultants range from those where AI is front-and-center to those where AI is folded into the product or service.
1. ChatGPT: This large language model-based chatbot, launched on November 30, 2022, has taken the world by storm. It responds to users’ text prompts in a conversational dialogue exchange that makes it useful for idea generation and information summarizing to drafting content. Developed by OpenAI, it is the fastest-growing ‘app' of all time. While not a replacement for high-level strategic thinking or skilled writing, it serves as a valuable tool for professionals. ChapGPT comes in a free version and a more sophisticated paid version.
2. DALL-E 2: This generative AI technology allows users to create realistic images and art from natural language descriptions. In other words, it creates new images with text to graphics prompts. Users get 15 free credits a month, or can buy additional credits to generate bulk images.
3. Canva: This graphic design tool helps users create social media graphics and presentations with text and images. It also offers an online AI image generator that allows users to enter written prompts and receive customized images in return. The image generator currently gives free Canva users 50 queries (prompts) in total on the platform, while paid accounts get up to 500 queries per user per month.
4. Lumen5: This AI-powered video creation and editing tool allows users to create videos from text. It transforms online text, for example from a blog post or article, into a video. If users want to base the video on text that isn’t already online, they can paste written content directly into Lumen5.
5. Grammarly: This cloud-based typing assistant reviews spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, engagement, and delivery mistakes in English texts. It suggests replacements for the identified errors and also detects plagiarism.
Don’t assume everything AI tools do is accurate
When it comes to using AI to generate content where accuracy and truthfulness are critical, blindly relying on what a generative AI tool produces is risky.
By way of illustration, Kami explained how she asked ChatGPT to write a bio and that it “made up that I won an award I didn’t and misstated my college education.”
Ars Technica’s AI and Machine Learning Reporter Benjo Edwards calls this “confabulation.” He explains that confabulation can result in serious problems when “an AI bot generates false information that can potentially mislead, misinform, or defame.”
That's why Madelyn recommends “double-checking any facts that an AI tool may generate” and “us[ing] a variety of sources like Google’s Fact Check Explorer, reputable media outlets, and original research papers/reports to verify your AI’s content.”
She also warns creators to watch out for plagiarism, noting, “Even though it’s brilliant at paraphrasing, it may inevitably generate copy that’s a bit too similar to something else.”
Nevertheless, don’t hesitate incorporating AI-generated content into your content strategy
When it comes to weaving AI-generated content into your overall content strategy, Kami suggests using a three-pronged approach:
• Identify which tasks can be automated and which require a human touch
• Generate ideas with AI to streamline the processes
• Edit the content to ensure it aligns and resonates
She also advises “us[ing] AI tools responsibly and ethically to maintain trust with your audience” and remembering to “[ensure] transparency about the use of AI-generated content, avoiding bias and discrimination, and respecting intellectual property rights.”
