It seems that we PR bloggers spend a lot of time talking about the phenomenon of blogging and wondering if it will, or won't, supplant us in the future (I am guilty as the next person).
Suffice it to say that I think PR will survive, but talk is cheap.
Shel Holtz had a post yesterday about applications of SMS, a technology that lets you send an instant message over a cell phone. He came up with three ideas.
His post, and several others, including these two from Amy Gahran about the limitations of blogs and another about using RSS to follow a conversation between blogs, makes me think that we need to start some wholesale blogstorming about applications.
So, join the conversation!
Please add your ideas in comments or trackbacks about applications of blogs, SMS, and any services that you know of who can technically help to deliver the message. How have you used social media creatively in a campaign, etc.
Heck, resurrect an old post if you must, but we need to shape what PR in the Social Media age will actually look like. This is the PR revolution.
If you need a list of technologies that are out there that we can use, David Phillips gave a pretty good one last month in this post.
Here are just a few of my ideas to get started:
SMS
In San Antonio, our local water system (SAWS) sends out weekly watering advice by e-mail, phone message or their call-in line. SMS would be an easy and natural extension and might even save time and money over automated phone messages. Make government cool.
BLOG
Make your local chapter of PRSA, IABC or other association relevant by starting a group blog to track local issues and advocate for the profession. We just started one in San Antonio last week for PRSA.
LISTSERV
Do you live in a community with a Homeowner’s Association? Make a YahooGroup for your HOA and push out important and breaking information, plus open it up to allow anyone to post un-moderated (two-way conversation). My community loves the one I started.
